Mass Alliance is proud to endorse Lynn City Council candidate, Ty Chum, to its Rising Stars program. Chum was born in a refugee camp in Thailand after his family fled the Cambodian civil war. In his early childhood, his family immigrated to the United States where Chum has called Lynn home for the past three decades.
He was a student throughout the Lynn public schools and later attended UMass Lowell where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management. He is now running for public office to give back to the community that helped raise him.
He wants to improve Lynn’s public schools by efficiently using the city’s tax dollars. He emphasizes the importance of arts and sports in the lives of young people, as well as access to mentorship. He has organized public opioid awareness events and held workshops with anti-violence and anti-oppression organizations based in Lowell. This experience fits into his plan to execute citywide violence prevention programs that provide other options to young people besides a life of cyclical violence. Another essential aspect of what Chum wants to accomplish for Lynn involves building a sustainable environment. He wants to work toward a clean energy economy and expand access to renewable energy for all households.
Chum believes that Lowell has offered him and his family so much. He wants to ensure that Lowell is a safe and healthy community that will continue to improve the lives of the people that live there. His deep empathy for those that have experienced violence only make his commitment to building a strong community that much stronger.
