Mass Alliance is honored to endorse Lizbeth DeSelm into the rising star program. As an elected member of the Melrose School Committee since 2015, Lizbeth has focused her tenure on increasing transparency on the board, making Melrose more inclusive to its LGBTQ+ students, and limiting the financial impact of charter schools in the district.
As a professional, Lizbeth DeSelm is a scientist at EMD Serono Research Institute, where she utilizes her knowledge of organic chemistry and biochemistry to develop novel small molecule therapies. To date, she has worked on oncology, fertility and autoimmune therapeutic areas and is co-author of multiple published patents.
Over the past 4 years, Liz has done things differently. Despite being told “School Committee members do not do this,” she has visited each PTO at least once, to talk about the Melrose Public Schools budget process and how the public can get involved in the process. Liz has worked with colleagues to bring a deeper, more impactful student voice to the School Committee. This kind of forward and out-of-the-box thinking is exactly what we need in our elected officials.
