Cara Berg Powers
Mass Alliance is excited to endorse Cara Berg Powers during her race for school committee in Worcester. Having attended Worcester public schools herself and a current Worcester public school mom, Cara is personally committed to ensuring every single student of the system has access to the educational opportunities she and her daughter have.
Her career has been centered around youth development. For the past 15 years, Cara has worked in various roles regarding education. She is currently on the faculty of Worcester State University and has formerly taught at UMASS Boston, Wheelock College and Clark University.
Cara has worked with youth outside of academic institutions as well. She was the Executive Director of the Transformative Culture Project; an organization that works with the youth of Massachucetts to address the social and economic challenges of making a living as an artist. She also spent time working at the Worcester Youth Center where she did her Doctoral Dissertation with high schoolers that were creating a film proposing better summer job policies.
Outside of working, Cara is an active member of the Worcester community. She serves on the board of her synagogue and has also volunteered as a member of the city’s Human Rights Commission for over 8 years. She and her husband have spent time volunteering as basketball coaches at St. Peter’s Church, the league where she herself played and where her daughter currently plays.
Cara’s appointment would be a huge asset to the city of Worcester. Her breadth of experience, dedication and personal connection will revive the school committee and positively impact the city as a whole.
