Byron Rushing

Byron Rushing is a progressive Democrat running for re-election to the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Byron serves in the 9th Suffolk district, which ecompasses the South End neighborhood of Boston. Initially elected in 1982, Byron’s priorities have and continue to be human and civil rights, and the development of democracy; local human, economic and housing development; and housing and healthcare for all. Byron successfully sponsored legislation to create the Commission to develop a comprehensive plan to end homelessness in the Commonwealth, as well as many substance abuse related bills, specifically for the over-the-counter sale of sterile needles and the law creating statewide guidelines for hospitals dealing with violence victims. He was also the chief sponsor of legislation for substance abuse “treatment on demand”. Byron was an original sponsor of the gay rights bill, and the chief sponsor of the law to end discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in public schools. He was a spokesman against the restoration of the death penalty, and leads the effort for size acceptance and anti-discrimination on the basis of height and weight. He is also concerned about the constructive re-entry of ex-offenders and was a proponent of CORI reform. Byron was also a leader of the Commonwealth’s anti-apartheid efforts.

Byron is a champion for historic preservation, women’s rights and reproductive health, immigrant rights, gun reform and LGBTQ rights. During his service in the legislature, Byron has served and chaired numerous committees and is currently serving as the Assistant Majority Leader.
